As the 2023 NFL season approaches, Buffalo Bills fans are filled with anticipation and excitement. After an emotionally charged 2022 campaign that saw the team reach the playoffs, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the Bills. However, with high expectations come concerns and worries. Let’s dive into some of the top concerns and worries that Buffalo Bills fans may have as they look ahead to the upcoming season.

The Trenches

A high area of concern for the Bills is their offensive line depth. While the starting unit is solid, injuries or performance issues can quickly derail the offense's effectiveness. The Bills must ensure they have capable backups ready to step in if any of their starters go down. The Buffalo Bills made a great choice by adding Connor McGovern to their roster. In the previous season with the Dallas Cowboys, he only allowed two sacks, seven quarterback hits, and 14 pressures, resulting in a remarkable 97.6 pass-blocking efficiency rating, according to Pro Football Focus.

Another worry for the Bills is the production and depth of their defensive line. While they have talented players like Ed Oliver and Greg Rousseau, there is a need for consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks and run-stuffing ability. The Bills will need their defensive line to step up and create disruption in the backfield to complement their strong secondary and linebacking corps. Some good news here is Von Miller said he would definitely NOT be out past Week 6 of 2023 and that he is in a great spot to return as soon as possible and possibly even Week 1.

The Middle Linebacker Position

The lack of experience in the middle linebacker position could potentially become a significant issue for the Buffalo Bills in the upcoming season. Tremaine Edmunds, who was a key player in the Bills' defense, brought size, athleticism, and playmaking abilities to the position. His departure leaves a void that Dorian Williams, a rookie with immense potential but no NFL experience, has the potential to fill.

Williams' transition to the NFL might take time, as the speed and complexity of the game at this level can be overwhelming for young players. Adjusting to the defensive schemes, recognizing offensive formations, and making quick decisions on the field are all challenges that Williams will have to overcome, especially when Williams wasn’t a middle linebacker in college.

The Buffalo Bills’ coaching staff recently stated that they are in no rush to name their starting middle linebacker, which makes complete sense. But, the coaching staff should prioritize Williams' development by providing him with ample practice reps and opportunities to learn from experienced linebackers on the team. This would help accelerate his growth and ensure he becomes a reliable presence in the middle of the defense.

Red Zone Efficiency

The Buffalo Bills have established themselves as one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, consistently putting up impressive numbers in terms of yardage and points. However, one concern that has lingered for the Bills is their red zone efficiency. Hopefully, Ken Dorsey will accomplish this in year two as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator.

With the success of the past few seasons, the Bills will face the challenge of managing high expectations. The pressure to perform at a high level can sometimes lead to added scrutiny and potential distractions. It will be crucial for the team, coaching staff, and players to maintain focus, block out external noise, and remain disciplined in their approach to avoid any detrimental effects on their performance. Luckily, Josh Allen seems to be more rejuvenated then ever and seems to flourish more even under the most severe pressure.

Injuries

In 2022, the Buffalo Bills were plagued by injuries, especially on the defensive side of the ball. This concern looms large for the upcoming season, as injuries significantly impact the team's performance and depth. Maintaining the health and well-being of key players will be crucial for the Bills to retain their competitive edge.

In addition, implementing proper training and conditioning programs and having quality depth throughout the roster will be essential in minimizing the impact of potential injuries. Although this area of the game is hard to avoid and predict, it certainly played a massive factor in 2022, and it will be grounds for concern in 2023.
