Way-Too-Early Buffalo Bills Roster Projections: Defense & Specialists | The Wandering Buffalo

Today we continue our waaaay too early roster projections. If you missed the offensive side of the ball make sure you go back and check it out. I enjoyed this exercise more on the defensive side of the ball. I think it is easy to have big concerns on the defensive side of the ball when looking at the big names lost this off-season including Poyer, Hyde (maybe) and Tre’ White. The truth is there is still some concern for me during this transition period, but working through the depth and key pieces we still have on the defensive side of the ball coupled with Babich and McDermott and I felt more comfortable. Let’s get into it!

Defensive Line:

Same as the offensive line, I lumped this whole group together. The defensive side of the ball is different from the OL depth, but I do think that the numbers kept at DE and DT affect each other, but also with the Bills heavy rotation the strength of each player matters that much more. I have the team keeping 9 total in Groot, Miller, Epenesa, Oliver, Jones, Smoot, Austin Johnson, DeWayne Carter, and Jovon Solomon. This makes our cuts Casey Toohill, Eli Ankou, Cameron Kline, Branson Deen, Kingsley Jonathan, DeShawn Williams, Rondell Bothroyd, and David Ugwoegbu. I would say the toughest cut here was Casey Toohill, as he was a player we have just signed that I do think could have some upside. That being said, I think he was a player that was brought in to give Beane flexibility in the draft and you would like Solomon to perform well enough throughout the off-season to secure that last spot. The other names here familiar with fans are Ankou and Jonathan. I think both could find roles on teams in the NFL, but it’s just not here. They have both been around the team for years and have had circumstances that gave them chances to make an impact and latch onto the roster. They have both been solid at teams, but I don’t think have ever done enough to stick to the 53. With the money freed up from Tre’ White i could see this room as a candidate for an addition. This would particularly be at edge for me. I think there are questions at depth, but more importantly what we can expect from Von at this stage in his career.

Linebackers:

The LB room was a challenging group for me just because the team is already so thin on numbers compared to how many they typically carry. Definitely a position group that i anticipate some tinkering with throughout the off-season. I have the Bills making only one cut and that being Deion Jones. I think there is a world where he could still be productive depth for us, but I feel like hes a few years past that point, and there are some younger options that fit more with the younger and cheaper mentality this off-season. That leaves the Bills keeping Bernard, Milano, Dorian Williams, Morrow, Spector and rookie Edefuan Ulofoshio. The starters may be one of the best pairings in the league when healthy, but seeing the injuries last year and how much the depth was tested down the stretch I have concerns about the depth here. Hopefully we see Williams take another step and possibly get some contributions from Ulofoshio.

Cornerback:

The cornerback room was a group that I felt I might have concerns with due to the loss of Tre’ White. Don’t get me wrong, Tre’ is a huge loss; he’s been great when healthy and he happens to be one of my favorite players of all time. The reality is, due to injuries we’ve already spent much of the last 2 seasons finding a way without him. In that time the team acquired Douglas and Benford has become one of the most underrated corners in the whole league in my opinion. I think the Bills have solid talent here, but similar to the LB room I have concerns if we deal with any injuries. I have the Bills keeping Benford, Douglas, Elam, Taron, Elam, Daequan Hardy and Ja’Marcus Ingram. The cuts here being Kyron Brown, Keni-H Lovely, and Te’Cory Couch. My big concern with this room is what Elam looks like this year. I think when he’s been in the lineup he has flashed at times and I am probably a bigger supporter of him than most. I don’t think that’s to say that he was great and didn’t have mistakes, but he also came away with game changing interceptions and plays on the ball.

Safety:

The S room is always a tough group for me with Damar Hamlin in the mix. I was higher than many on him before his cardiac arrest in Cincinnati. He was starting a bunch of games and playing adequately (albeit a bit fast and out of control at times). If I was told today that we could have that version of Hamlin he would be on the roster. The bottom line for me is he was a roster spot all last season and spent almost the entire year inactive. I know this is a super tough cut for the team with everything that happened, but the team did right by him as far as I’m concerned. They fully guaranteed his contract after the injury and gave him the chance to come back. At the end of the day it is a business and tough decisions need to be made. I have him being cut this year, but I cant say that I would want to be the one doing the cut. Along with Hamlin I have the team cutting Dee Delaney and Kendall Williamson. This makes the group headed into next season as Rapp, Edwards, Bishop, and Lewis as of now.

Specialists:

Finally, we wrap up with the specialists. Reid Ferguson is a stone cold lock for me as long as he wakes up and wants to continue playing football, and Tyler Bass returns as the kicker. I do think it’s a bit interesting that despite some of his struggles last year, the team has not brought in anyone to at least compete with him. Maybe we will see this through the off-season. Where they did add competition was for punter, and maybe this tells us they feel like more of the kicking issues came in the holding department. I long for the day when we can stop having these conversations. I think bringing in Haack and Jack Browning signals the team may be ready for a change at the position. That being said, based on Haack’s last stint with the team I’m not ready to sign back up for that and I think counting on a UDFA might be a little much at this juncture. Maybe Browning can impress throughout the off-season and trigger a change, but for now I have Martin returning.

That wraps up the 53-man projection. Drop a comment and let me know what you think or what you think the team may do differently.

Stay tuned for more articles throughout the off-season and as always……. GO BILLS!!!

(Immediately upon completing this article, the Buffalo Bills signed Gable Steveson. I see him as a fun project, maybe a practice squad guy, but he would end up on the cut list for now)
