Key Matchups: Bills Defense vs. Texans Offense
This week’s contest will largely hinge on how well Buffalo’s defense can bounce back from its poor showing against Baltimore. With Von Miller suspended for four games, the Bills’ pass rush will need to step up, especially against a Texans offensive line that has struggled to protect their quarterback, C.J. Stroud, in dropback situations. Stroud, while talented, has often been forced to make plays with his legs due to inconsistent pass protection.
Without Miller, Buffalo's defense needs to find other ways to pressure Stroud, because if they don’t, Houston’s receivers could have a field day. Collins, as mentioned earlier, is a major threat, and Diggs adds another dynamic weapon that could spell trouble for Buffalo’s secondary. In a game that could very well turn into a shootout, the Bills’ defense will need to focus on two things: pressuring Stroud and keeping the Texans in third-and-long situations. If the Bills can force the Texans to abandon their play-action game and rely on dropback passing, they’ll have a better shot at controlling the game.
Another critical element is the health of linebacker Terrel Bernard and cornerback Taron Johnson. If either of these players is unable to suit up, the Bills’ defense could be in serious trouble. Johnson, in particular, will be crucial in defending the Texans’ versatile slot receiver, Tank Dell. Dell is quick, shifty, and can cause problems in the middle of the field. Bernard, on the other hand, will be key in helping Buffalo’s linebacking corps defend the run and limit Houston’s play-action attack.
Prediction: A High-Scoring Showdown
Given the talent on both sides of the ball, I’m expecting this game to be a shootout. The Bills don’t like losing two games in a row, and after their humiliating loss to the Ravens, they’ll be out to prove that they are still a top-tier team in the AFC. At the same time, the Texans are an emerging powerhouse, with one of the best wide receiver groups in the league. Both teams have a lot to play for, and both will be looking to make a statement.
